Scripture Reference: 2 Kings 6:8-17
There is nothing more precious and beautiful than to see God’s creation all around us. God made His creation in vivid rays of colors from blooming flowers, magnificent trees, vast blue oceans, blue skies, bright illuminating stars, breath taking snow capped-mountains and luscious green hillsides and valleys. One can’t help standing in awe and wonder of God’s mighty works, yet God has more for us to see. Our Heavenly Father wants us to look beyond what we see, to what He sees.
I love God’s Word because it tells us about real-time events with real people that we can relate to. Such is one story about the Prophet Elisha; and a young man who was his servant. The King of Syria was troubled by the Prophet Elisha warning the King of Israel of the Syrian army’s battle plan, so he sent his great army to surround the city where Elisha and his servant was staying. Elisha’s servant arose early and saw the Syrian army surrounding the city and he became fearful, he asked Elisha “what shall we do”? The Prophet Elisha answered “do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are against us”. Then Elisha prayed “Lord I pray, open his eyes that he may see”. The Lord opened the young man’s eyes and he saw the mountain full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha”.
When we focus on the challenges we face, fear and doubt will set in and blind us to what God wants us to see. Just having eyes to see will only show us what’s happening and bring limitations. But having spiritually open eyes will tell us what to do and when it is about to come according to God’s plan in every situation. The Lord has already set the work He has for us to complete in place, we need “open eyes” to see His provisions, His desires and blessings. Jesus tells us in John 4:35; to lift our eyes and look at the fields for the harvest is ready. Jesus wants us to open our eyes and see what He sees, thereby, walking in faith with “open eyes” bringing people out of bondage and entering into the Kingdom of God. Having open eyes means we shift the focus off our situation and trust the Lord to change it on our behalf. His grace is sufficient to get us through the difficulty.
Jesus really presses the importance of having open eyes in His Kingdom, He tells another story of a man who was blind in Mark 8:22-25; “a blind man begged Jesus to touch him, so The Lord led him away and spit in his eyes and laid His hands on him. Then He asked him if he saw anything, he said I see men like trees walking”. Jesus touched his eyes again and made him look up, the man was restored and saw everyone clearly”.
Prayer: Oh God, let us not see others as objects, but give us open eyes to look up and see men as men, women as women and children as children; open our eyes beyond what we see in our lives and the lives of others. Lord, open our eyes that we can step out of all the limitations that surrounds us, and allow us to see what You are seeing. In Jesus Name!
